The course study

Overview

Quinta do Lago North is the more approachable sibling inside the Quinta ecosystem, but that should not be mistaken for filler. Originally opened in 1974 as part of the Ria Formosa course and rerouted several times over the next four decades, the North Course was completely redesigned in 2014 by Beau Welling in collaboration with Paul McGinley — the European Ryder Cup captain who also serves as Quinta do Lago's touring professional ambassador. Their brief was specific: build a second course that would hold its own against the South without simply imitating it, and that could host a European Tour event while still serving resort visitors year-round.

What they delivered is sharper, more modern, and much better suited to the kind of repeat-play resort golf that actually makes a week work. The course hosted the Portugal Masters in 2019 and has featured on the Challenge Tour since. It does not have the symbolic weight of the South Course, but it has enough quality — and notably better greens — to matter. Water comes into play on five holes, the routing is more varied than the original Ria Formosa layout, and the conditioning has been consistently strong since the reopening.

The experience

This is the sort of course that earns affection over multiple rounds. It is playable without being soft, smart without being oppressive, and very easy to fit into a luxury Algarve trip where not every day should feel like a championship exam. For mixed groups or second-round scheduling, it is extremely useful — higher handicappers are less likely to spend the day searching the pines, while stronger players can still find a proper test from the back tees on the right pin days.

The front nine moves through the same pine-and-cork-oak corridors as the South but opens out more quickly. The back nine runs along the Ria Formosa boundary and closes with a three-hole stretch that has genuine stakes — the long par-4 16th, the short par-4 17th, and the reachable par-5 18th finishing in front of the clubhouse terrace. Pace of play tends to be quicker than the South, roughly three-and-a-half to four hours, which is another reason the course slots well as a second round.

Routing & design

Welling's 2014 redesign reworked the original Ria Formosa routing to give the course a more distinct identity from the South. Fairway corridors are slightly wider, greens are larger, and the bunkering is more modern in shape — cleaner lines, more strategic placement, fewer decorative green-side bunkers. Water comes into play on five holes, concentrated on the back nine around 11, 13 and 15.

The course plays flatter than it looks, with only the rises on 7 and 14 giving any real elevation change. Greens are slightly larger than the South's — 6,000 square feet average — and receive approaches well, which is part of why the course suits mixed-ability groups. The back tees push yardage to 6,245, and the course plays close to scratch from there in mid-wind conditions.

Key stretches

Holes 3–5 — the early water

A gentle par-5 3rd followed by the downhill par-3 4th over water, then the long par-4 5th that runs parallel to the first lake. The first stretch where the course's water character becomes obvious.

Holes 11–13 — the back-nine pivot

The dogleg par-5 11th around water, the mid-length par-4 12th through cork oaks, and the par-3 13th over a small pond. Three holes that separate the round for most visitors.

Holes 16–18 — the Welling finish

The long par-4 16th along the Ria Formosa boundary, the drivable par-4 17th with its Welling false front, and the reachable par-5 18th. A genuinely strong closing three, especially in match play.

Signature holes

The par-3 4th plays downhill to a green framed by cork oaks and backed by a small lake that is easier to carry than it looks. The par-5 11th is the best driving hole on the card, a sharp dogleg right around water that rewards the brave line with a reachable green. The short par-4 17th is genuinely drivable for longer hitters but punishes anything wayward — Welling added a false front and a deep left bunker in the redesign. And the par-5 18th, finishing in front of the clubhouse, is reachable but defended by a burn crossing the fairway and a green that releases away.

Hole by hole

4Par 3

The downhill short

A downhill par-3 framed by cork oaks and backed by a small lake that looks worse than it plays. The green releases away from short approaches; long and dry is the miss.

11Par 5

The water dogleg

The best driving hole on the course. A sharp dogleg right with water on the inside. The brave drive opens a reachable second; the safe line leaves a longer, blinder approach.

17Par 4

The drivable short par-4

Welling's redesign made this genuinely reachable for longer hitters but added a false front and a deep left bunker that make the miss expensive. The smart play is a mid-iron to the fat of the fairway and a wedge in.

18Par 5

The clubhouse closer

A reachable par-5 with a burn crossing the fairway at 260 yards. The green releases away from the approach, so the second shot is a genuine decision. Finishing in front of the terrace.

Practical information

Best paired with a Quinta do Lago stay, as part of a two-or-three course itinerary with the South Course and Laranjal. Tee times are usually easier to secure than the South in peak windows — three to four weeks' notice is often enough outside the highest-demand weeks. The Magnolia Hotel and Conrad Algarve both offer preferential rates and timing for guests.

Buggies are common but walking is manageable in cooler months, particularly between November and March. The North is slightly longer than the South on paper (6,245 vs 6,488 yards is a misleading comparison — the back tees play longer because of additional tee boxes added in the redesign) but the routing is less tiring because the stretches between holes are shorter. October to May is the sweet spot; summer can be warm but the umbrella pines give enough shade to make morning rounds pleasant even in July.

Who it suits

  • Mixed-ability groups where the South would be too punishing for the weaker players.
  • Couples and pairs on a two-round Quinta stay.
  • Repeat Quinta visitors — the North reveals more than the South on third and fourth rounds.
  • Players who like strategic par-4s and can use a wedge into elevated greens.

Planning notes

  • Pair with the South as the second round of a two-round Quinta stay.
  • Book three to four weeks ahead — easier than the South but still worth locking in.
  • Take an afternoon tee time on calmer days — the back-nine water looks different in late light.
  • Stay at The Magnolia for the simplest logistics across both courses.
  • Extend the trip by a day to add Laranjal — three-course week in one estate.

Where to stay

Stay inside Quinta do Lago or nearby Vale do Lobo and use North as one of the core rounds in a broader central Algarve itinerary. The Magnolia Hotel, a few minutes from both courses, is the most efficient base for a two-course Quinta week. The Conrad Algarve is ten minutes away and the right call for couples or groups wanting a stronger pool, spa, and destination-hotel feel.

For longer stays or groups, villa rentals inside the Quinta estate itself are one of the area's genuine differentiators. The Lake area and the cluster around the North Course are both strong locations. Book through Prestige Property or The Campus for the most curated villa inventory. Vale do Lobo is ten minutes east and offers its own villa stock and resort infrastructure if the trip mixes both estates.

  • The Magnolia HotelBoutique four-star, on-estate

The most efficient golf-focused base for a Quinta week. Shuttle to both courses and preferential tee times.

  • The Conrad AlgarveFive-star destination

Ten minutes from the course. Strongest pool and spa in the corridor and the right call for couples.

  • Quinta do Lago villasSelf-catering, luxury

Villa rentals inside the estate, particularly in the North Course cluster. The best-value option for groups of six or more.

Where to eat

Quinta do Lago's restaurant ecosystem is part of the reason this course makes so much sense. The round fits neatly into a long-lunch, easy-transfer, low-friction day.

Umami at The Magnolia is the strongest in-resort Asian option. Casa Velha in the converted farmhouse is the reliable proper-dinner room of the estate. Bovino handles the steak nights. 2 Passos on Praia do Ancão is the default long-lunch destination after a morning round. For a quieter local dinner, Adega Vila Lisa in Almancil is twenty minutes away and one of the Algarve's best-value traditional rooms. Gigi on the beach is the scene-y Saturday lunch. The Campus — the resort's training and wellness centre — has its own restaurant, Pure, that handles the healthier lighter lunches between rounds.

  • Umami, The MagnoliaPan-Asian

The strongest in-resort Asian option. Long dinners, sharing plates, reliable service.

  • Casa VelhaPortuguese-French, estate

    The estate's proper-dinner room in a converted 18th-century farmhouse.

  • 2 Passos, Praia do AncãoBeach long-lunch

The reliable long-lunch destination after a morning round. Grilled fish and an afternoon on the sand.

  • Pure, The CampusLight, healthy

The wellness-forward lunch room at the training centre. The right call between rounds.

The verdict

The best second-round course in the central Algarve and a genuinely strong round in its own right. Not a headline destination, but the course that makes a Quinta week hold together.
