Overview
Royal County Down occupies what may be the most dramatic setting in all of golf. Nestled between Dundrum Bay and the sweeping Mourne Mountains, this links course has topped global rankings for decades. The course was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1889 and refined by Harry Vardon, and the routing makes brilliant use of the towering dunes, gorse-covered hillsides, and natural bunkers that define this stretch of coastline. It is raw, beautiful, and ferociously difficult — a genuine test of links golf at the highest level.
The Experience
From the first tee shot, Royal County Down demands your full attention. Blind drives over dune ridges, approach shots to greens hidden among the gorse, and ever-changing wind conditions make this one of the most mentally demanding courses in the world. The front nine is particularly spectacular, weaving through the highest dunes. The back nine offers slightly more open terrain but no less challenge. Walking off the 18th green with a good score here is one of golf's greatest achievements.
Signature Holes
The 9th hole is one of the most famous in golf — a blind drive over a mountain of gorse to a fairway that cascades toward a green framed by the Mountains of Mourne. The par-3 4th plays across a valley of heather and gorse to a green perched on a shelf above the sea.
Practical Information
Visitor tee times are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Booking well in advance is essential during peak season (May–September). A handicap certificate is required. The club has a strict dress code — collared shirts, tailored trousers, no denim. Walking only on the Championship course. Caddies are strongly recommended and can be arranged through the club.
Where to Stay
The Slieve Donard Resort & Spa sits adjacent to the course and offers comfortable four-star accommodation with views of the Mourne Mountains. For a more intimate stay, the Burrendale Hotel in Newcastle is popular with visiting golfers.
Where to Eat
The Oak Restaurant at the Slieve Donard serves modern Irish cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. In Newcastle, Vanilla Restaurant offers excellent seafood in a relaxed setting. The clubhouse lunch at Royal County Down is simple but satisfying — and the views from the dining room are unmatched.
